Besides primitive desires to get new stuff for the sake of it what are the good criteria to analyze and choose new programming languages, platforms and paradigms? Do we need one more web framework for Python or Ruby or what we have now is enough?

Someday I will come up with the set of criteria to analyze new programming appoarches.

3) Very creative borders between logical groups or elements

Then I tried to login with new user:

What’s the heck? I just created a user and can’t connect?

After 1 hour search of internet I realized that to login you need to do the following:

myhost:~ mturilin$ mysql -u root
mysql> delete from mysql.user where User='';
Query OK, 2 rows affected (0.07 sec)

After that everything started working!

P.S. Another strange thing is that on Mac by default you don’t have /etc/my.cnf

To create it you need to do:

myhost:~ mturilin$sudo cp /usr/local/mysql/support-files/my-XXXX.cnf /etc/my.cnf

Where XXXX could be one of the:
1) small
2) medium
3) large
4) huge
 

Game Success

• Each Game must have virality and monetization.
• If you invent radically new idea, think: “Why nobody haven’t create anything like that? Maybe because it won’t work?”
• Many successful games were made by taking existing successful idea and making in little bit better.

Gameplay

• Facebook games are different from traditional games for computers.  Top 100 most successful games for Facebook doesn’t include games with a traditional gameplay, only viral-social ones. The difference is that social games must have a short interaction cycle – people don’t have 20-40 minutes chunks of time to play. The average interaction is about 5 min – after that their boss or phone call could distract them.
• Social game can’t require a long guide to start play – nobody would read them. It should be obvious for everybody how to play.
• Never punish players by removing their experience points.

Virality

• To have virality you need to think about two motivations:
  • Reason for user to send message to his friends
  • Reason to the friends to sign up for the game

Metering

• Two metrics should influence game design from the very beginning
  • Cost of user acquisition
  • Lifetime value of each user
• You MUST ALWAYS track these two indicators.

Game development

• Many games are developed in 6-8 weeks
• Before development you may want just to advertize non-existent game to see if people are clicking (=interested in the idea)
• Ship early the minimum viable product to start receiving early feedback from users
• Sometimes you need to make changes to the game. When you change there will be always people who complain. You should not plan to have no complains but to make sure you will get more users than lose.
